SUMMER STAFF POSITIONS

Cabin Counselor: The primary responsibility of a counselor is to care for the needs of their campers, creating a safe and engaging environment. Counselors are assigned to a cabin of 8-10 youth whom they lead through the camp schedule. They also plan, lead, and participate in activities with campers.

Program Support: This position provides leadership to one of four key program areas – archery, challenge course/climbing tower, crafts/creative arts, and naturalist/creation. These roles require the ability to instruct people, flexibility, and creativity. Applicants ideally have a background and interest in the activity area they desire. The work also includes assisting counselors and cabin groups throughout the day, serving on the dish crew, and assisting with program setup.

Site Support: This vital staff position works with the Property Manager in maintaining the site and facilities. They help with site projects, assist with dish crew, and may provide program support in the evenings.

Leadership Team: Members of this team work with the Program Director to plan and schedule weekly camp activities and serve as mentors for counselors.

Kitchen Assistant: These staff members work with the Head Cook to prepare all of the delicious meals camp enjoys. Experience is preferred, but those willing to learn on the job are encouraged to apply. 

Lifeguard: Lifeguards are responsible for the safety of all participants in and around the pool and any off-site water activities. Primary responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining the camp pool, as well as lifeguarding the pool and lakefront activities. Secondary duties will include assisting on dish crew, camp activities, and camp cleaning. Applicants must have a current lifeguard certificate. 

Nurse/medic: The camp nurse/medic will gain hands-on experience helping kids every day! Duties range from administering campers’ medications to putting on band-aids. Applicants must be in nursing school or RN certified.

Applicants Need:

  • Willingness to show, through words and actions, a commitment to a diverse camp community that is rooted in love, support and inclusion for staff, campers and guests.

  • Willingness to be part of a Christian community that affirms inclusive Lutheran values and engage in program activities that may include prayers, skits supporting our values, silly songs, songs about God, daily chapel and faith conversations.
  • Willingness to work hard, be flexible, and serve in a variety of ways. This will include nights and weekends work.

  • Applicants must be 18 years and older. 

  • All summer staff must submit to federal criminal background and national sex offender checks, provide personal references, and agree to abide by all Camp Lutherwood Oregon Personnel Policies.
  • Some positions require additional certifications such as CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard Certification, or a Food Handler’s Permit.

Staff Orientation begins on June 12, 2024. Last day for staff is August 12, 2024.

Yes!  All staff are paid for their summer of work. Positions are salaried and range from $5,280 – $5,720 (pre-tax) for the full summer season. Staff are also provided housing, laundry services, and meals at no charge during their employment. Bonuses are available for returning staff members and recruiting friends as staff members. 

The summer begins with about 10 days of orientation. Staff are expected to be present for the entire training period. 

The typical work week of a salaried position is Sunday morning through Friday morning. The reality of camp is that you spend time with campers and are responsible for their safety and well-being the entire time they are at camp. Your work day may include eating meals, hanging out at the cabin, swimming in the pool, playing capture the flag, making s’mores, sleeping, hiking, cleaning bathrooms, singing, and more.  

Camp Lutherwood offers weekend programs during the summer season. At those times, work days and times off are adjusted as needed for each staff member.

Yes! Typically, staff will have Friday afternoons and Saturdays off. When that is not possible due to weekend programs, alternative days will be designated to allow for adequate rest and downtime. Staff also receive breaks during the program day that are coordinated by the Program Team. 

If you need additional days off, please request the dates at the time of hire.

Camp is a great place to build your résumé with leadership opportunities, team work, and problem solving skills. 2024 SUMMER STAFF POSITIONS

Leadership Team: Members of this team work with the Program Director to plan and schedule weekly camp activities and serve as mentors for counselors. Must be 21 years or older and have prior camp or leadership experience to serve in these positions. 

Camp Staff: Camp Staff are responsible for the safety and well-being of all campers.  Each camp staff will work collaboratively to build an inclusive, safer and more caring community within cabin groups and the whole camp while engaging campers in fun, creative, and safe experiences and activities. Staff will rotate through weekly assignments including cabin counselor, program support, activity leader, kitchen assistant, office support, dish crew or site support. No two weeks are alike! Camp Staff must be at least 18 years of age.

Secondary duties will include assisting on dish crew, camp activities, and camp cleaning. Applicants must have a current lifeguard certificate. 

Camp Medic: The Camp Medic will support the health and well-being of all campers, staff and guests every day! Duties range from administering camper medications to putting on band-aids. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and medically trained (EMT or higher and hold current CPR certification).

We know that life can be stressful and hard. We want to work with you to help keep you mentally and physically healthy. You will get daily breaks to check out, recharge and refresh. Many of our staff come to camp seeing a virtual or online counselor, and we would love to work with you to make sure you can maintain those key relationships during the summer season.
